Teacher Bio

Marianne Brogan, a local ukulele obsessive, is founder of the Portland Ukulele Association (PUA), and sponsor of uke concerts, workshops, and the Portland Uke Fest. Since 2001 Marianne has been dedicated to world transformation by ukulele players. Marianne teaches private and group classes to beginners of all ages. Fall 2006 Ukulele Workshops

Learn the joys of ukulele playing with the founder of Portland?s Ukulele Association (PUA), Marianne Brogan. The ukulele is a fun and easy instrument to play, just four strings! You?ll laugh and feel happy. It just works that way.

5-week workshops Tuesday evenings, starting September 19, 2006 $75 for five sessions, materials included. Classes held at the Artichoke Music's Backgate Stage located at 31st and SE Hawthorne Blvd.

Beginning Ukulele ? Level I -- 6-6:50 p.m. Level I, introduction to the ukulele, assumes the student has little to no musical instrument background. Learn the fundamentals from the ground up in a patient and fun environment. Melody, chord formation, rhythm, and basic strums. Class limited to 5 students.

Beginning Ukulele Level II -- 7-7:50 p.m. This jam class is an opportunity for beginners to focus on becoming more proficient at changing chords, developing rhythm, strumming and pic patterns, and singing. We will start each class with ear and rhythm training, and then apply our learning to songs currently being played at PUA gatherings. Limited enrollment.

Intermediate Subjects: Chord Inversions on the Ukulele -- 8-8:50 p.m. Want to spice up your playing? By applying just a few chord ?shapes,? this workshop will introduce you to second, third and fourth position chord inversions of the common open chords you already know. Give yourself a new musical challenge and the songs you play new life. Particularly good for rag-time tunes and jazz standards. Limited enrollment.
