The hammered dulcimer is one of the world's
oldest musical instruments, dating back 800 years or more. It is
found throughout the world, from China to the Middle East, Europe
and North America. Many people, upon first hearing the hammered
ducimer, immediately fall in love with its sound and may
eventually want to learn to play it.
I began playing hammered dulcimer in 1990 and
have been performing and recording since 1993. I have studied with
Steve Schneider and Linda Lowe Thompson, and have taught workshops
for the NW Hammered Dulcimer Society's annual Chatter Creek
Festival and for the Prairie Dulcimer Club in Kansas City. I play
with my own Celtic group, Talisman, and with the Portland Megaband
(world's largest contradance band) and in other groupings for
English country and contra dancing. I have accompanied the Aurora
Chorus, the Portland Lesbian Choir and other groups in peformance
for choir and hammered dulcimer by Malcolm Dalghlish. I also
perform as a soloist and, in 1997, competed in the National
Hammered Dulcimer Championship at Winfield, Kansas. I have
recently completed two years of musictheory study at Clark College
in Vancouver.
I bring a lifetime of musical experience with
piano, bands and choirs to my playing and teaching of the hammered
dulcimer. If you have never played before, I will help you to get
started making music at your first lesson, then help you learn
more advanced skills and music theory along the way in future
lessons. I'll help you to improve your skills and knowledge if you
already play.
To schedule lessons, please contact me. I will
enjoy getting your instrument singing in your hands and will work
with your learning style to assure musical growth and enjoyment
along the way!
