Music Bio

Award-winning Oregon musician and songwriter Kate Power is synonymous with folk music in the Pacific Northwest. Her songs, such as Travis John and Kitchen Waltz, not only win awards, but they also touch the heart.

As a teacher, Kate helps you learn to play instruments and write songs in a natural, friendly setting. No experience is necessary, and instruments are optional.

As a coach, she works with musicians of all levels to provide resources, guidance and practical how-to information.

Note

Teaching engagements are available in private or group settings for all ages & levels. Individuals, group and school inquiries are most welcome.

The Classes

Specifics about Kate's classes include:

DADGAD Guitar
Micheal O'Domhnaill (Bothy Band, Relativity, Nightnoise) taught Kate the strings of DADGAD in 1981, and her guitar has lived in that tuning ever since. She can guide you from the basics through to the subtleties of DADGAD in style.

5-String Banjo
Learn the basics of Frailing, 3-Finger Seeger picking and more!

Ukulele for Beginners
Learn to play for fun or add a new voice to your repertoire with a ukulele! Chords, strums & picking styles that are fun for everybody.

Bodhran
Explore the Irish drum in one easy lesson and start playing to the tunes you love. All levels welcome. Monthly Bodhran class coming soon! (Note: A prerequisite for beginners in a group class includes one private lesson with Kate to give you the tools you need to participate.) Fun is guaranteed!

Singing
As a co-founder of "VoxBox," Kate will help you build skills that enhance any genre you want to sing. As she guides you through vocal strengthening exercises and fun ways to explore growing your voice, you will also learn how to sing harmony and how to arrange folk songs to suit your style and voice.

Stagecraft
Kate can help you conquer stage fright and develop satisfaction in your performance. Get your nerve right where you want it and leave your fear of performance behind as you learn how to grow your confidence and win your audience.

Songwriting & Songcraft
Kate will help you give your words and melody a new vehicle to jump in and motor down the super highway of songwriting. Write songs to sing your stories. From birth to hindsight and hope to memories encountered or imagined, Kate will show you how to take the road on and off the map to find the songs that are waiting inside and express them in your own personal style.

Using the landscape of your experience and a seasoned guide, you will find the crossroads where YOUR lyric and melody meet. Also included in Songcraft is an exploration of existing songs for original ideas and interpretation.
