Music Bio
I grew up with music, as my
mother was a teacher of piano and voice; after I had learned to
read music and play piano, I had my first violin lesson when I was
4. During my school years I played many woodwind instruments and
had fun playing in a dance band. Although I loved playing with
other people, I didn’t learn the joy of playing by ear until after
I discovered the autoharp and taught myself to play in 1983. I
lived in various locations in California and Arizona, and had the
opportunity to jam with a variety of musicians. This has given me
great pleasure, and great versatility in my playing. I do enjoy
sharing my experience with others, so that they can bring this joy
into their lives.
Over the years, I attended autoharp/music
festivals in Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Colorado, California and
Oregon, where I got to know autoharp players from all over the
world. After helping to present autoharp workshops at the Phoenix
Folk Festival in 2001 and 2002, I became a co-founder of the
Arizona Autoharp Club in 2003. This group hosts the annual Arizona
Autoharp Festival, which I am helping to coordinate via email
since moving to Portland in 2006.
Learning to play this beautiful-sounding
instrument will bring each student a feeling of accomplishment and
joy. You will learn to strum and accompany your voice, pick
melodies, and explore a variety of musical styles, as you discover
your favorites. I believe that playing by ear and learning music
theory come easily with an autoharp in your hands, and I encourage
my students to take advantage of this. Please call me for
information on private lessons and workshops.
