Music Bio
I am Joan Harrington, a local musician with a varied background in
teaching and performance. I play with a local band, Maggie's Parlour, on
the recorder and several other instruments. I have worked with children
and adults as an instrumental instructor since my high school days,
giving lessons, teaching general music and band in a private school, and
directing children's musicals for school and church. Presently I teach
recorder privately and in classes at Alliance Charter Academy in Oregon
City. I enjoy imparting the love of music to my students.
I began learning music in grade school, first on the alto saxophone
and then guitar and recorder. By high school's end I was a performing
soloist on all the woodwind instruments, and won several trophies for
jazz solo work at stage band contests.
As an adult I took fiddle and bluegrass performance classes at
Clackamas Community College. While at CCC, I met a few other like-minded
souls and we became Maggie's Parlour, an Irish/folk band that plays in
the Portland Metro area. I perform on soprano and alto recorder as well
as being the lead singer. In the band, I also play backup fiddle/guitar,
flute, and electric bass. I am presently taking lessons on the Irish
pennywhistle and picking up pointers on the mandolin to increase my
musical versatility.
I take great pleasure in teaching the love of music to students of
all ages and abilities. I look forward to enlarging the talents of my
new students!
