Music Bio
I have a deep commitment to acoustic music
as evidence by the level of teachers I have sought out for myself, and the
styles of music I play. I am equally commited to passing this music on to my
student by teaching solid technique, theory, arranging , and practice
habits. I believe the best way for a student to become accomplished in the
style he/she chooses is to learn as many examples of that style as possible
and have fun while doing so. After all, the point is to PLAY music!
Methods I use to teach are note reading,
tablature, and ear training. One of my goals is to bring the student to the
point where he/she learns songs and tunes by ear. Patience is the key here,
so we go over it, and over it, and over it, and over it.
Lessons are available by half or one hour,
payable in advance in four lesson blocks. At the end of each four lesson
series, the student may at his/her option choose to contract for another
four lessons.
Education: Clark College, Vancouver,
Washington & University of Portland. I studied privately with the following
guitar teachers: Will Bledsoe (formerly rated by Downbeat Magazine) two
years jazz guitar studies and 3 1/2 years classical guitar. Flatpicking
instructors include: Steve Kaufman, David Grier, Robin Kessinger, Paul
Chasman (flatpicking, fingerpicking and extensive theory, harmony and
arranging). Fifteen years study Puget Sound Guitar Workshop with the
following notable instructors: Eric Schoenberg (ragtime, Chet Atkins,
Celtic), John Miller (early blues), Woody Mann (traditional blues), Eddie
Pennington (Travis thumbpicking), Wayne Henderson, Russ Barenberg and Eric
Thompson.
Other major workshops: Steve Kaufman's
flatpick camp, Bluegrass at the Beach and Sound Acoustic Music Camp.
