Board of Directors

Richard Colombo, Executive Director, is co-owner of Artichoke Music. Richard earned a degree in Music from Portland State University and has made his living performing and teaching music for over 25 years.  Richard’s passion for music and community has been the inspiration for Artichoke Community Music.

David Kunz, Board Chair, has a Master’s Degree in Urban Design with minors in planning and chemistry.  He works for Oregon Department of Environmental Quality as an environmental project manager specializing in sustainability and pollution prevention.  He also is a budding musician who plays guitars and sings in a number of local groups. 

 

Bill Douglas, Vice Chair, is a native Portlander. He is employed by Standard Insurance Company as a Compliance Manager in Individual Annuities. Bill also serves on the board of several national non-profit organizations. He has been taking guitar lessons here at Artichoke, which in his words has given him a new lease on life.

 

Paula Abrams, Secretary, is a professor of law at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon.  Her area of expertise is constitutional law. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards and professional committees.

 

Jim Morris, Treasurer, is a principal with the MBL Group, LLC. a human resources consulting firm. He provides consulting services to non-profit organizations and mission driven sustainable companies throughout the west. Jim is also co-owner of Artichoke Music. He plays guitar and is an inspiring songwriter.

 

Allen Mathews, Board Member, is a music teacher and award-winning classical guitarist.  He teaches at Lewis and Clark College, Oregon Episcopal School, Artichoke Music, and has a private teaching studio.  Allen holds a B.A. in music, and has completed workshops and courses in business and project management.  His interests include ethnic world music, hiking, and sewing.

 

Dan McIlhenny, Board Member, Dan’l joins Artichoke Community Music with a long storyline of life experiences as a musician, fundraiser, event organizer and creative contributor. His career path sauntering includes work with both Non- Profits and private business: Portland Songwriters Association, John Muir Association, Sierra Club, Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Far-West Folk Alliance, Kiwanis Intl., Milhous Children’s Services and Santee Lake Regional Parks to name a few. Yes he’s a tree-hugger and proud to be an Artichokian too!

 

Jan O'Dell, Board Member, has lived the greater part of her adult life in Oregon, and the last 20 years in Portland. As owner of Jan O'Dell Marketing and Communications, she helps resource conservation-focused organizations communicate with the public. She plays guitar and sings regularly with her partner Margie, and with a group of pickers and singers that evolved from another music organization, Make Music Portland. She puts her communications and marketing expertise to work at Artichoke Community Music, helping the organization publicize its workshops, concerts and annual folk festival.

 

Frank Stovall, Board Member, is a recently-retired second language teacher. Frank grew up in a musical home and developed a passion for music from his father who was an accomplished classical and church musician. During his 28 year career in public education, Frank has worked with students, kindergarten through adult, of many different cultures and languages.
